How many trees can you plant in one life?
In five EU Member States, more than half of the land area was covered with forests: Finland (66%), Sweden (63%), Slovenia (61%), Estonia (54%) and Latvia (53%). In 2021, the EU had an estimated 160 million hectares of forests (excluding other wooded land); in relative terms, this means that forests covered 39 % of the EU land area. In 2021, the share of forest land over the total amount of land in Italy remained nearly unchanged at around 32%.
In 2010, Sardegna had 773 kha of natural forest, extending over 34% of its land area. In 2023, it lost 671 ha of natural forest. Sardinia covers an area of nearly 24 100 km2, of which more than 81 % is rural. Of the total area, agricultural land covers 44 % and forest land 17 % and another 35 % consists of natural grassland and natural areas.
